What's the weather like to live with outside the SE? (1st world problem)

What's it like living in the Welsh or SW English countryside (especially with respect to the weather)? I was raised in Australia, so don't really have a "feel" for the UK climate outside of London (and some remote parts of Scotland).

I want to move out of the SE and find a secluded/quiet/neighbour-free house with lots of trees. Where should I go?

I like Wales and the Welsh and it seems to be the only place in the South where you can live amongst trees (well at my budget anyway). I'm quite waterproof, but she who must be obeyed is concerned about the weather in Wales - particularly the amount of rain... most months have >1mm rain for ~15 days! How does it affect your life?

Similarly she is reluctant to go past say Sheffield to the North due to the temperature.

I've been checking out the UK climate maps, and Wales seems to have a similar amount of rain as Devon & Cornwall (home to the optimistically named "English Riviera"!?).

  • Northern Ireland is non-stop Roadworks. Temporary Traffic Lights are part of the landscape. :)

  • It will be a sacrifice indeed.

Trigger point this week was fleeing conflict in the house to the lovely park nearby for some space and quiet... I was hyper-aware of every car driving on the road next to the park, I could hear the trucks on the A406, the trains, the sky was criss-crossed with plane vapour-trails (and the accompanying noise)

Everywhere I turned was people speaking loudly on their phones, shitty shitty music blaring from people sitting around drinking & having to walk through their cigarette smoke.

Down by the little lake were people dumping whole loaves of bread and last nights dinner for the birds - it's been so prolific during lock down that the usual ducks, geese etc. are out-numbered by seagulls & pigeons 10:1.

So I left the park and was accosted by some deluded nut-jobs shrieking into megaphones that the world would burn if we didn't embrace jesus, forcing me to walk on the road so I got honked/yelled at by a van driver.

    I gotta get outta here.
