Are females underdiagnosed?

Hi everyone. I sometimes think about something and then can’t get it off my mind... this has been on my mind for the last week.

People often say that females are underdiagnosed with autism or that they get a later diagnosis than males, what’s everyone’s opinion on that? Is it true? And if so why do you think it is?

  • I’m 18 and a female and I have only just been diagnosed with autism which as been hard as I haven’t had any support until now. I think females get under diagnosed as they display a lot of different symptoms to males and most research on autism is actually on males with autism. A lot of females with autism usually get misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression. Apparently females are also better at masking there autism and can cope better in social situations.
