4 years later finally diagnosed yesterday for my 10 year old son.

After 4 years of fighting we received our diagnosis yesterday for our soon to be 11 year old son.

Relief as now he can get the support he needs and is in the last year if primary school so hopefully I can get things In place for secondary school.

I'm worried / sad / happy / and so confused.

Don't even know where to start. Any tips would be really helpful. Thanks in advance Relaxed

  • My 14 and a half year old daughter was diagnosed yesterday- yup, 9am Sunday appointment :)   just waiting for the formal report.  Asperger's - though it now just called autism.  It's been a huge struggle to understand her since the day she was born and I just thought she hated me all these years!!  I suggest you let his new school know, so that they can try to understand him better.  I'll have to let my daughter's school know, plus some immediate family.

The thing is, during the last 11 years you have hopefully found at least some ways of getting understanding and communication with your son and getting the best out of him.  I would suggest you continue with what you know works for him, and read some of the many books available, to get insight and tips from other parents.  Perhaps it's a relief for you both to have the diagnosis.  My daughter is hugely relieved as she knew she was different in so many ways - this helps her to understand her self, and hopefully it will be the same for your son.

Hopefully, with the diagnosis you can focus on how best to parent him to enable him to grow into a successful and hopefully confident(ish) young man.  Best of luck.
