A fund for private diagnosis

I see a lot of stories of people that have to wait extremely long times to get an assessment/diagnosis from the NHS and they couldn't get a private one because they are expensive.

Is there not some sort charitable fund that pays for people to have a private assessment, and if not would be worth seeing if something like that could be set up? I have no idea about how charities work and where they get funding from apart from public donations but it's something that I think a lot about ever since I was diagnosed and became part of the community.

If I'm just being naive, tell me why because I'm not sure why something like that doesn't exist.

  • The "NHS Right to Choose scheme" is a way around this. You'll have to find your nearest private organisation who is with the NHS right to choose scheme,  Psychiatry-UK are particle well known. once you have found your choses organisation you'll have to fill the referral form and hand it into you general practitioner. Most doctors don't know about the scheme and will no carry out the referal or make some excuse but stick to your guns and actively call your surgery to make sure that the referral is sent and received every week as practice don't often take the referral seriously and put it in the low priority which could take months to be processed. Keep in Mind it can still be rejected by the surgery policies in which case i would make a formal complaint and autism ambassador involved .

  • There is the NHS Patients Choice or Right to Choose, it seems to be called different things. Basically you can choose to go private if the NHS can’t meet your needs. I believe you present this to your GP and they might have to inform the CCG. You essentially divert money that would have been used to fund NHS treatment and spend on private practice.

I had my assessment this way. I was done and dusted in 2 months after being told I would wait 2-3 years for the NHS.

From you experience a lot of GP’s don’t even know about it, let alone tell people about it, which is an oversight in my opinion. Especially now with waiting lists getting out of control.

  • Along with the fund for pay for my holiday and buy me a new BMW

  • Oh really lol, not for me I'm diagnosed but I just thought it was a good idea to help people so they don't have to wait so long to get an assessment and also for those that can't afford it.

  • Don't know about a charity but looking at the many selfish & stupid crowd-funding requests on sites like GoFundMe and KickStarter that get money, it's probably worth a shot trying it for a diagnosis?
