What help is available to autistic adult?

Hi, long post sorry, the last time I posted to this was about 5 months ago when I was at a breaking point of years of struggles with my daughter. Including breakdowns, trying to runaway, taking scissors and hacking off all her hair in a field, cahms (very long wait which ended up in a negative experience as she ended up even worse!), going to uni but got zero help and ended up in deep depression, diagnosed with mixed anxiety and depressive disorder, referred for bpd but dismissed and upped antidepressants instead. We finally after another long road of fighting had her assessment yesterday and she has been diagnosed. He was a fantastic man, can't fault him. He said with 26yrs of experience, even without all the forms we filled in previously, just talking to and observing her for 30 mins it was 100% obvious she is on the spectrum and apologised that she had been missed at every turn. I was so happy I could of cried. Any parent out there that has been through the struggle will understand, its not that I'm happy she's autistic, it's that she may finally get some help.

I am so exhausted I can't describe, especially as I have a 10yr old that is exhibiting behaviours and he told me to keep it in the back of my mind but unfortunately like my other daughter doesn't display enough that schools will pick up on as she also masks it.

After all this, if anyone is still reading, my question is What help is available for her or me  (if any).

He said the paperwork will take 4-5 weeks but he would be including a referall for a psychologist, a social services assessment and all info on support groups etc.

Just wondered what people's experience was after diagnosis and if there were things out there to help 5hat we wouldn't even know what to look for?

Thanks for any reply

  • Yes I've been googling like mad lol, but not easy to find. We are still to receive the actual report so hopefully we will get somewhere with that. The specialist was lovely when he diagnosed and said he would be recommending she see a psychologist and get a social services assessment, and give details of the support groups she would now be able to access with his diagnosis which would also earmark her needs.

Which is brilliant if that happens but we have been on such a long journey of being ignored that I'm very sceptical.

Hopefully it is all finally going to fall into place and we need to just wait a few more wet find out exactly what help she will get.

Thank you for taking the time to reply
