Share your hobbies

Hi everyone,

Hope you had a nice weekend. Just wanted to ask around and hear everyone's favourite hobbies and pastime. Don't be afraid to share something unusual; I'm sure other people enjoy it as well.

Thanks!
Jack.

  • Fabulous! Have you ever been interested in learning traditional methods? If so, you should search for historical reenactments in your areas as most of them will offer it, along with other skills like cooking, leatherworking, blacksmithing, stitchwork, craftsmanship, etc. It's not for everyone, but most groups will attend events around different castles/villages in the UK where people from across the country come to meet and craft together.

It's amazing when you see it. You should consider visting a local event in your area for the day, there's loads of people to talk about this with and ask questions to. For those who like crafting, the whole day is pretty much sitting in a tent, speaking to people (or not if you don't want to) and crafting all day. Some people sell what they make to visitors.

  • Wow, what is your book about? I bet that's exciting! Grin I enjoy creative writing, I feel like it's a great thing to practice multiple skills with. I have an archive of written ideas/short stories I add to every so often.

That's beautiful, congratulations! Maybe your child will want to learn to sing when they grow older Smiley

As for drawing and photography, I highly respect people who have those artistic abilities. I used to draw when I was much younger but nowadays my skills have worn to say the least. This summer I've been practicing concept art as a way to visual my ideas. That includes: challenging yourself to draw 10 unique designs of something in 10 minutes, for example a car. That speed and sketching style allows you to quickly jot ideas down giving you a palette of varying designs - details don't matter, you start with the shape and work from there. Honestly I reccomend trying it out, it's a fun way of drawing!

  • could u open a discussion on knitting/crochet/tatting/lace---- things like that - havent seen one for years-  I could open it for u if u give me a title

  • I spend a lot of time playing the viola, both in orchestra pre covid and by myself.

I also love thread work like needlepoint lace and crochet and I want to take up tatting soon. There are loads of different forms and you can do so much with it and there are loads of different styles for different uses.

  • my autistic nephew make 20 calendars every year around xmas and we have to buy them at 20 quid each. He has a different photograph for each month of places he has visited. All his photos. It is like a family Christmas tradition now.

Just an idea for you thats all

  • I like to make things like bags and calendars. I also like writing and hope to release a book soon. I'm also a keen singer, I love to sing. I sing to my unborn child every night. I also do a lot of photographyand drawing. I'm very fortunate to be able to draw and sketch quite well Slight smile

  • oh i love a good skip lmao  ---- it amazes me what people throw away. I hunt for older radios in charity shops as they are of better quality that new radios made today ----- last month I got a 1980s sony for 3 quid and its now my best radio. I love it.

  • Sounds awesome. It makes me wish I had better DIY skills haha. If you have any pictures it'd be cool to see some of the stuff you repaired.

I really enjoy going to the tip and junkyards to look around. I'm mostly interested in the computer hardware and electronics to play around with at home. People throw good stuff away. Before I remember finding a WinXP era keyboard which worked but was just old. I cleaned it up and reconfigured it to use as a stream deck/sound board sort of thing. Similar sort of story with a USB SNES controller.

Some of the stuff I use has been found and re-purposed. I've found some things don't need to be 'updated' and retain their quality over the years. Though I wouldn't say I'm great at repairing/salvaging old things, just an opportunist :)

  • fixing things ---- i love fixing things ideally using recycled materials

last week i fixed one of my axes. I added a ne handle made from Gas piping left lying ( litter) after the gas guys had put in some repair to a  gas leak.

yesterday I fixed my favourite pair of boots  using rubber bands cut from bicycle inner tubing ( its very high quality ).

    It gives me immense pleasure
