Why do I mishear?

I have this problem, that at times I mishear what people are saying or singing, this happens in real life, on TV and radio.

Today I was shopping and the piped music I was hearing was,   Annie Lennox singing, 'walking on Zombie land'.  When I got home I looked it up on the net, and she was actually singing about walking on broken glass.

  • This happens to me and my partner, especially will tell me he said one thing when I most definitely heard another. I don't believe him most of the time but have to trust what he's saying is true as it isn't done maliciously.   It's happened a few times at work too. A colleague was telling me about fish pakoras she made. I asked what type of fish did you use? She said "it was chicken, I said chicken pakoras.  You are tired, go and take your break". No matter how tired I was, I still don't believe I miss heard her.

It's like when I feel awkward or am made to feel daft / awkward when I haven't got a joke or sarcasm. I mostly put it down to the other person's delivery.  Why's it always me who has to be at fault.

  • yea there is one guy in work from Stoke and when he speaks I miss about 50% of his words. We came to an agreement that he would email me instead from a certain day onwards. I felt very stupid saying "what are u saying , can u repeat that" over and over. He clearing felt my embarrassment.

He is a really sweet guy and very accommodating.

  • Whys thr post been put as -1?

That's a good idea anyway. It sounds like it's you who has the problem not him. I work with low level English speakers so am used to communicating with people who others find difficult. There's also a man there who has had a stroke and has reduced communication but for some reason I can understand him when I think others would struggle. For others who have no problems communicating, I have more confidence now to ask them to repeat or I lean in more and block one ear out. I think in the past I wouldve just tried my hardest to listen and understand.

This missing words seems to be one word I miss-hear in a sentence. Or I'm told I said one thing when I swear I said another. I think sometimes my brain goes too fast.

  • absolutely yes its me that has the problem  ----

with the person mentioned it is entire sentences for me. But like I say he a very nice guy and went out of his way to make me feel ok  by emailing documents of what he wanted me to do. His techniques of helping where so good I put it to the entire team that his techniques should be used.
