New and looking for a bit of advise about primary school (hating it)

Hello

Our 9 year old son was diagnosed with high functioning autism (possibly with anxiety) 2 weeks ago.  We are waiting for a home visit from paws and for our sessions in april and have been scouring for information.  It's mind boggling.

Our current immediate problem is that he is hating primary school.  All we can get out of him is that is 'boring'!  We have tears and upset every morning and he goes into school looking so sad, is distant and doesn't engage in the lessons for alot of the day.

We've tried offering rewards etc, keep charts and giving him encouragement in the mornings but I think it's getting worse.

Would anyone else have experienced similar and found something that helps?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Kind regards

  • Can you not be there with him at school as a named support or get him a buddy in class ?  Sounds to me that the current set up is slowly becoming emotional trauma cycle for him, why put your son through this each day, take him out under sickness until the situation is resolved.

  • Hi - have you asked for a statement of educational needs so he can have support at school?  Mainstream can be difficult, especially when the time comes to move up to secondary.  What does his school say + what are they doing to help him as things stand right now.  He does sound unhappy but is it just boredom?  Sorry for all the questions!
