Background conversations

Does anyone else have the inability to carry on a conversation with the person in front of you if there are other conversations going on in the background?
No matter how much I try and focus on the conversation with the person in front of me, I can’t seem to tune out the other conversations and it results in me going blank, getting flustered and struggling to remember what I was just talking about and also struggling to find the words to continue the conversation.

Do any of you know what this inability is called? Tried looking it up to make sense of it but can’t find an accurate match to my experiences.

Thanks.

  • Yes. Entirely. Over-stimulation.

I took some acting classes in my youth which helped with focus and I can summon the discipline but sometimes it's just more effort than necessary. At this point if it's distracting I just start talking about the other conversations as a moment of comedy. I'm afraid I don't know why this is either other than heightened sensory perception.
