Background conversations

Does anyone else have the inability to carry on a conversation with the person in front of you if there are other conversations going on in the background?
No matter how much I try and focus on the conversation with the person in front of me, I can’t seem to tune out the other conversations and it results in me going blank, getting flustered and struggling to remember what I was just talking about and also struggling to find the words to continue the conversation.

Do any of you know what this inability is called? Tried looking it up to make sense of it but can’t find an accurate match to my experiences.

Thanks.

  • Just a bit because of too many simulanteous inputs I think. I find it hard to focus on group conversations, too many threads crowds out the processing capacity and it starts to become hard work.

You might just try suggesting that people go somewhere without background distractions to talk to you. Tell them they deserve your attention but it's hard to focus over the din. Most will appreciate that.
