Getting Diagnosed Experience

I would like to know - if you're in the process or already diagnosed. How your experience was? What could be improved, what could be left out. How can we help not autistic professionals understand us. Did you get labelled with another diagnoses apart from ASC?

  • Hiya,

I'm waiting on an assessment. Frankly our local MH services don't seem very clued up at all. They've heard me say things and seen so many behaviours indicative of potential autism and yet failed to spot anything. I was left to figure out myself what the Hell is going on.

I must have read hundreds of blog posts and psychological journals searching for something that could fit what I was experiencing and nothing! In between all the searches was the repeated appearance of the NAS descriptor of a melt down. I kept batting it away, 'cos I'm not autistic! Then I read it. That's what it feels like. My husband read it. That's what it looks like. I scratched my head in bewilderment. How can that be? Then I read the childhood indicators...errrrr oh, oh, oh. I spoke to my mum and ....oh, oh, and some more oh! Did the online tests...errrr a few more ohs!

My GP and my teacher boss then immediately recognised it as a potential and here I am, waiting for a professional to tell me whether this is autism or just a mega SPD producing autistic type meltdowns, or what.

The only other diagnosis is acute phobia and consequent anxiety...hmmm, what the services could do is sharpen themselves up to the clues 'cos folks won't respond to treatments well whilst an undiagnosed ASC or chronic SPD is standing in the way.

  • My diagnosis was really efficient I went private it took about 2 weeks total from when I sent my first email to them to getting assessed and then it took 3 days to get my report. I think if your happy to spend the money on a private diagnosis it’s better purely because of the wait time I’ve seen stories of people waiting months but I think it all depends on where you live too some places are busier than others

my diagnosis is ASD/C with possible ADHD but I didn’t get assessed for that don’t think I will either
