Private health insurance

I have a three and half year old son who I am 99% sure has Aspergers. I haven't picked up the phone to the GP yet and so thus far there is nothing on his medical record. We have private health insurance through AXA and have not paid for the mental health option. Is Aspergers classed as a Neurological or Psychiatric issue? ie ought I add the mental health option before I talk to the GP?

  • Since Asperger's (and other autism stuff) can sometimes be seen more as a brain development thing than a mental health issue, you might wanna check with AXA to see how they label it. That way, you’ll know if you even need mental health coverage before chatting with your GP. Just makes sure you’ve got everything sorted for your son.

  • Aspergers isn't classified as a disease more, and it is also almost impossible to treat, so I don't think this will help you anywhere. All you can do is go to a psychist for analysis. If they confirm that your child has it, you should treat your son according to his particular state. He'll need special education and more attention than other kids (if you have one). However, it depends on the severity of the syndrome. You could also reach out to some professional brokers like [link removed by mod]. I hope it helps you and that your son feels excellent!

  • Asperger's (AS) is no longer used as a diagnostic term. It is now Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) without an accompanying intellectual impairment.

It's confusing because ASD is classified as a neurodevelopmental condition, but a diagnosis is made using criteria from The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), which suggests it is a psychiatric disorder.
