  • Orchids!

Orchids became a distinct group from other plants 112 million years ago and are the second largest flower family in terms of number of species after daisies. To put that into a bit of suspective, the first flowers formed only 130 million years ago.

Because of this orchids have spread all over the globe, on every continent other than antarctica, and have around 28,000 current known species, which is over 4 times the number of known species of mammals. They are usually highly pollinator specific and can be very adapted to suit this specific pollinator, for instance in gongoras, which are pollinated by euglossine bees, or in Angraecum sesquipedale, also known as Darwin's orchid, which is moth pollinated.

They are distinguished from other plant families by their flower anatomy, in particular the fusion of the stamen and the pistil into one structure called the collumn.
