Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism? Why?

Hi everyone,

New to this site.

Just wanted to start a light hearted discussion to get your views.

Some take offence to one or the other so I am wondering...

Do you prefer the term Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism?

Why do you feel this way?

Or are you not bothered?

  • Here’s a more interesting question. The term autist? Yes / no? https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Autist

initially I wasn’t a fan but I’m warming to it. If nothing else reading from the greek root it suggests a person who’s profession is being them self. From the Greek autos for self and the ist suffix in chemist, artist, journalist etc.

also it appears to have begun life as a term used in a flippant or moderately offensive way and reclaiming words is a very useful thing for marginalised groups to do. It means people can’t even easily insult you without calling to mind the sorts of things you say about yourselves.
