Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism? Why?

Hi everyone,

New to this site.

Just wanted to start a light hearted discussion to get your views.

Some take offence to one or the other so I am wondering...

Do you prefer the term Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism?

Why do you feel this way?

Or are you not bothered?

  • I am not offended by word order.  The most appropriate ordering would depend on circumstance and what was the most relevant term. In general usage, my personhood is obvious, so 'autistic person' would seem most fitting. However, if I was attending a school open day for an offspring, then 'father with autism' would be more appropriate than 'autistic father', as my identity as a father would be the most relevant identity.
