Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism? Why?

Hi everyone,

New to this site.

Just wanted to start a light hearted discussion to get your views.

Some take offence to one or the other so I am wondering...

Do you prefer the term Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism?

Why do you feel this way?

Or are you not bothered?

  • Personally I don't care and it wouldn't offend me if someone called me an adult with autism

But if I'm describing myself I would say "I'm autistic" or "An autistic adult" because I just think it's more accurate, "adult with autism" just doesn't seem right to me. It implies that it is something that have which means it could be treated or cured, eg if someone has cancer, they HAVE cancer they are not cancer it can be cured. if someone has the flu, they have flu it will go away they are not flu. Autism for me (even though I'm new too all of this being diagnosed 2 months) is literally part of who I am it affects how I think and operate in the world but not like how an illness does but because it literally makes up my personality.

  • That’s a great analogy. Big fan of that. I’m exactly the same. Do you watch any YouTube videos about autism? Or does anyone?

  • Autistamatic is fantastic. I've just started watching Ponderful, Purple Jess and looking into more.

My first autistic YouTube channel was Ask An Autistic by Amethyst Schaber.
