Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism? Why?

Hi everyone,

New to this site.

Just wanted to start a light hearted discussion to get your views.

Some take offence to one or the other so I am wondering...

Do you prefer the term Autistic Adult or Adult with Autism?

Why do you feel this way?

Or are you not bothered?

  • Aaron,

I am not bothered, I do prefer "autistic adult/person" because I see my Autism as part of my identity, I wouldn't be who I am if I were not autistic.

I assume it's individuals who want a cure who prefer "person with autism", I've seen some who don't see autism as part of their identity.

Autistic person can be like LGBTQ+ person, being LGBTQ+ is part of their identity.

But person with autism and person with LGBTQ+ makes autism and LGBTQ+ sound like a disease.
