There are 'scales' for severity that the professionals working with your child can use to see where they are right now, such as the CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), but it's important to know that things change -- which is why people often don't want to say it's severe/moderate/mild etc. In fact a lot of us who work in the field really dislike these labels, most people with autism have some things they're good at and others they aren't and so many be at different levels in different areas of function.
