Adult referral

Hi,. my 20 year old son has asked if I can arrange a referral for him.  We have thought for some time that he had some autistic traits but have not taken it any further.  He now wishes to have a diagnosis but I'm not sure how to proceed.  GP waiting time is 18 months - 2 years.  Any advice on private routes?  Many thanks

  • I think you can go direct for a Private referral.

In my case I my anxiety was getting worse as I got older and my GP suggested that there could be an underlying cause. So we agreed that I would write a whole lots of notes.

My GP did try to get an NHS referral but just couldn't get anyway In our area (Fareham, Hampshire) so I requested the Private route and then got referred to a Physchiatrist at the Priory Wellbeing Centre, Southampton - cost about £300. The Physchiatrist read all my notes and gave me a few questionaires to fill in before our session, which was about an hour or so,

He diagnosed me there and then with Aspergers but suggested that I would be better getting a full assessment with an ADOS test.

So, I went to Hampshire Physchologists starting with a initial asessment that they do for everyone to determine whether a full assessment is warranted - NOTE that I could have gone straight to this assessment without the GP referral & Physchiatrist session.

The iniitial Physchologist assessment was £275 and the following full assessment was an extra £1500.

For this, I got a cover letter, brief report and a full report  (BTW this was all during 2019)
