Star trek and culture

My mom hated star trek and never let me watch it when me and my twin were little.

so many people the world over love it though. both star trek and star wars are classics yet i have never seen either. Where should i start? are they as worth it as people say they are? I dont get a lot of culture references to begin with and if I’m missing a good amount because i dont know these films then i would like to catch up.

and if reading this something pops into your head: what other movies and shows are very prominently referenced in culture? I probably wouldn't know them either

  • Always been a huge Star Trek fan (and anything sci-fi/fantasy) I think it's the escapism of it that appeals to me. Everyone will have their own likes and dislikes. Personally, the Original series is cheesy and very of its time. Next-generation is the star trek I grew up with and the first few seasons are awkward and cheesy but it gets better and is a great show. I also loved Deep Space Nine and voyager but they're very different - bit slower and can be tedious but it's fairly easy to skip through boring episodes. Enterprise is the sort of prequel tv series - it has fans (myself included) and alot of people hate it. I also love (and this is a controversial opinion but loved Star Trek Discovery (on netflix) its very "woke" I guess you could say which bothers some people but if you're new to star trek you might like it. There's also the star trek movies from the original series and Next-generation. They're awesome but helps if you've seen the tv show for context.

As for Star Wars I never understood the hype.

Like I said though everyone will have their own likes and dislikes about the various Star Trek franchises so it's worth just diving in and seeing if they appeal to you or not. I think all of the Star Trek TV series are up on netflix if you have it.
