When you feel stressed

Is this a general feeling for everyone in society or more common for us on the spectrum to have heightened sensory when we are stressed. I'm nearly 2 years into my diagnosis and I am still trying to figure out certain things in myself.

For instance the last few days I have had certain things going on in my life that are causing quite a bit of stress and can't help but notice my hearing sensitivity to things around me at work and at home are becoming a bit unbearable to the point where I feel like I am either biting my clothes or blurt out mumble jumble rubbish to try and calm down without anyone seeing me to shouting a bit more often. Not to mention the edginess in terms of feeling jumpy. 

Just a general question to see if its more to do with my autism or just basic stress that everyone has to deal with?

  • I think it might work both ways. I'm sensitive to emotions, elephants in the room, systems at play between people, not just lights, sounds, textures, etc. My hearing is also noticeably affected from too much sugar or alcohol or things which cause inflammation. Putting my world in a sort of ordering, being mindful of biological needs, sorting out my responses, staying healthy and creating boundaries has been crucial. Grating sounds or oppressive lights can cause a great deal of stress and I've had to learn to de-stress from biological sensory overload before dealing with emotional/psychological stresses. Sometime the relationship issues aren't as dramatic as I thought once my environment feels more peaceful (given that human or issue isn't in the room). It really depends. I've become very protective of my environment, which, when in order, I find it far easier to navigate human relations. 

  • I can relate to this. I’m definitely more sensitive to tensions between other people and unspoken conflicts, at certain times. Like you I try to manage my biological inputs to help. Although I’m a sucker for a cup of tea and cake!
