Stop the World, and let me off

In Northern Ireland, there's a Hilbilly Country song with the chorus;

"Stop the World, and let me off

I'm tired of going round-and-round

I've played the game of love, and lost

Stop the World, and let me off!"

That's how I feel now.

My support bubble is a bit of a pain, as a passenger; he said that himself. But, whenever I was trying to focus on the road, he was on about which Sperrin Mountain was at the distance from the view. Granted, it's a beautiful view, but I was afraid of something happening. The last thing I needed was another stresser.

My brother wanted me away, until Thursday at least, to keep the place shining, for the viewings. Then, last night, he texted me saying that something fell down in the hot press. Thank God it wasn't a burst pipe; my uncle said it was more likely a plank of wood from the support for the clothes. But I was near pandemonium at 11:30 pm.

My aunt-in-law kept going on about rent being 'Dead Money.' Yet, the only houses for sale - I can see - are family-sized. I don't want deja vù.

I can never get any me-time. It's 100 mph; constantly. I'm really in 'Hell is other people' mode.

  • Your share of the sale will mean some financial freedom and it gives you lots of options - don't make any sudden decisions.  Sometimes, renting can give you a lot of time and space to think about your next plans - and the house isn't your responsibility to maintain or worry about.

    Whenever we sell a house, we go into rented to break any chains that can become problematic - we're always 'no upper chain' sellers.

    On completion, the interest on the sale money sitting in the bank pays most of the the rent - free living - until we find something worth moving into so it takes all the pressure off - and stops any disappointment from people dropping out of the chain..

    We're also then 'cash buyers' which means we can negotiate a better price on the next house - really pull their pants down - they have probably got their heart set on their next house - how much do they really want it?.

    We rented for 2 years between this house and the previous - technically didn't cost us a penny and we were in no hurry.

    The last rental house was a bit of a 1970s dump - a very large house on 1/2 acre that a builder bought to flatten and build a load of flats - but he ran into money problems so he couldn't move forward with his plans - and he'd overpaid for the site so he was in limbo and unable to sell to break even - so it was very handy for us - and cheap to rent due to its poor decorative condition..

  • I agree with all this. Rent buys you time and opportunities, and can nearly always be compensated for by being a cash buyer and offering 1-5% lower than you would have.

  • being a cash buyer and offering 1-5% lower than you would have

    I'm not as generous as that - we only offered 70% of the asking price on this house - they were up against a timescale so they had to accept..
