6yr old son, not coping at school and obsessed with fire....help

Hi I haven't been around for a while, but having got my 14yr old son diagnosed with autism, I am now in the midst of having my 6yr old assessed. I am having a real hard time with him, he is not coping at school aspecially lunch time, the school have excluded him twice due to him getting verbally and physically abusive when he isn't coping. And as a suggestion due to not having staff for him I am now haviing to collect him every lunchtime and take him back afterwoods.  Apparently he has been assessed by a specialist teacher and the school are awaiting her report, he has been refered to peadeatrician and he has has a speach and language assessment, where he was quite below everage in all tasks. He is to be assessed within the next two weeks by the pru (pupil referel unit) so no idea what happens after that... and he is obsessed with fire. We thought for a while that his obsession came from a topic at school about the great fire of london, which led him to sneaking our spare lighters and setting fire to things, then once we realised and locked them up he was looking in the streets for matches ect. Anyway due to burning his carpet and paper, we asked the fire brigade to help. I am now becoming aware that he is still very obsessed with fire and seems intent on trying to fulfill that obsession even if its talking bout fire all the time. Is there any sensory toy or something that flickers like flames, as this would would meet his needs in a safer way. I don't know what to do pls help xx Lisa xx

  • hi - me again.  Whilst I was looking for something on the web I thought I'd search "flickering lights".  It came up with loads of bulbs with a light that mimics a flame inside.  They're cheapish.  I don't know if they're what your looking for, I suppose a bulb cd get broken, but doing a search on a couple of the main internet shopping sites may help.  I did post this earlier but it seems to have disappeared into cyberspace!

  • hi - yes, this thing about fire must be extremely worrying.  My son has an interest in fire but it's the opposite of your son's.  He is careful to make sure things are switched off etc.  How was he when the fire brigade got involved?  I was hoping to suggest his interest could be channelled into fire prevention but if the fire brigade didn't change his mind, then maybe that's a dead end idea.  I don't know about toys that flicker - there are those electric fires that flicker but I don't know anything else about them.  I don't know if there anything else via the home page, nas helpline etc that may be useful but worth having a try I suppose.  I hope other posters will be more useful than me!
