A levels without GCSEs

Hi there, my 16 year old wants to do A levels in Maths and Computer Science, but he doesn't have GCSEs. He has been home schooled for the last 3 years. I think he is academically capable, but does anyone know if this allowed or possible? And does anyone else have experience of this? Thanks :)

  • Good question.

I suspect that conventional schools would say no to the maths.  But would allow the computer science.

The big question is, why hasn't he got GCSE maths?  If he's good enough to do the A level, them he should breeze through the GCSE exam.

  • He should be doing his GCSEs this summer, but he is disillusioned with the education system because of previous experience, so he just wants to get the bare minimum quals he needs that would help him get a job. He feels confident having aced every past paper at GCSE level, that if he is able to do the same with past A level papers then there's no need for him to bother with the GCSE.

  • The main reason for getting a GCSE in maths is that maths and English GCSEs are a common requirement as an entrance to many educational and professional organizations.

Many  of these places are inflexible and bureaucratic. You can try reasoning with them, that maths A level is superior to maths GCSE.  But rules are rules! You need GCSE maths.  Remember it's an insane world.
