Self Diagnosis

I didn’t know where to else to post this, but I want people’s opinions on self diagnosis. I have been referred for an autism assessment and I’ve created an anonymous Tumblr page and I thought a lot of autistic people believed self diagnosis was valid BUT someone commented on one of my posts from ages ago (it’s the only time I used the self diagnosis tag which I’ve now removed) saying to look at their recent and it was about how self diagnosis can be harmful (which was understandable but they were on about medication, which I know for a fact isn’t an option with autistic people as my brother has never been given that option nor have I seen any information about it). 

I just feel very uncertain now about what to feel. I don’t particularly self diagnose myself but I do say I could be autistic and have used my Tumblr as away to log my traits and journey about my referral as a way to look back in it (and also reblog cute animal pics/vids). So I just want to know what others think?

  • to answer your question a professional diagnosis does carry more weight in my head. 

    The reason being is what is there to stop people just declaring they are autistic just as an excuse for their behaviour which could be drug related or something else, eg social anxiety. I dont mind people saying they are self diagnosed and waiting for a diagnosis. But I do wonder about some people I have met online when they claim to be autistic. How do I know for sure ?

    Having said that, there are places that refuse to provide autistic assessments, particularly for adults, so what are they supposed to do ?

    bottom line is, if u can, get a professional diagnosis, so you know yourself for real. 

    Maybe its just me I tend to be very sceptical than most.

    i 100% agree with that tbh! i just felt a bit attacked out of the blue because this person hadn’t even looked my posts and i’d accidentally used the self diagnosis tag once on the whole of my blog. all posts i do about what traits i may have say “possibly autistic” in the tags because i don’t know until i get an assessment which could be forever at this rate since no one knows where tf to refer me to Upside down

    i do agree though that with a lot of people it seems hella sus though but at the same time i guess no one knows for sure apart from that individual? 

    it’s hard tbh. thanks for replying with your opinion though!
