Do you ever feel like you manage to fit in?

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted on here for a while as I use it mainly when I have news to share or I'm feeling a bit down or confused.

I have a question that always pops into my mind and it is "Does any of you ever feel great when you manage to have a conversation with someone or people and to the extent where you think to yourself, could I actually be neurotypical?" Okay so the only thing that makes me realise its false hope is when I will get asked the unexpected or something I'm trying to explain but I don't know if its coming across to the other person correctly so they don't completely understand or I give a long story instead of getting straight to the point or need to really think before giving an answer to the point that my vocal chords start making my voice pitch go up and down.

Just these last few weeks at work its been really busy and to be honest I am very lucky 99.9% of staff are really nice but I've been talked to and had more conversations than usual and it feels good that I'm part of a team and also that I've not had any problems with anyone. I have been bullied in previous jobs to the point I've been shaking with rage but it just seems so great right now I do feel lucky.

When I get home yes I'm shattered and living with a family of 5 is tough but I wouldn't want it anyother way. My wife is understanding to me needing my own space timeout in the evening which I am very grateful for.

Anyway I hope everyone is in great health. Oh and I have a diagnosed ASC of the Aspergers type.

  • Yes, I do feel great when having a conversation on a subject with someone and feel part of something. I often find this happens when out litter picking as most people hate it and appreciate me collecting it and stop to chat. Or they love my classic Land rover and chat about that. Land Rovers being a universal language and this allows me to chat to strangers and yet fit in.

  • Well, your LR does highlight something quite significant, I think. In my case i could easily imagine finding common ground if  I owned and drove a Ferguson T20 tractor in an area where such classic items are timelessly appreciated. So I reckon it probably does help to either formally or informally 'announce' one's 'membership' of certain 'clubs'. Note how frequently rail fans suss each other out and indulge in endless discussion and cooperation. So why not find a few ways of announcing one's issues to the world!? And why not also combine them with your more mainstream obsessions?! In that respect you are perhaps lucky not to be an expat. Such interests are rare where I live. And certain sacred objects don't enthuse me at all, as they do for most people where I live. There are a few classic landies around here, but you would be far more likely to strike up a conversation here if both you and the other party owned top-of-the-range Discoveries. And they are going out of fashion too, in this increasingly austere place.
