  • I also spend a lot of time playing games on the computer.

Favourite genres: rpg's, civ-style games, real time strategy like starcraft, transportation tycoon games, and even the sims.

I played Final Fantasy XII twice. Including the 3 hour fight with the optional boss.

My favourite rpg is Wizardry 8, because it's lots of skill-management and planning... and fun battles with some strategy...

I loved old games like ultima underworld.

Recently I played some hours on Transport Fever 2, with very realistic trains in a very realistic landscape.

This is something I would be interested in, a cooperation based online dungeon crawling game, kind of a dungeons and dragons setting where you go in as a group but everybody has specialisation (classical rogue/wizard/fighter/...) I'm not sure they still have this. I did play a bit of Ultima online, but the player-killing got annoying.

  • There's literally a Dungeons and Dragons Online.  It's a bit of an old game, released in 2006 and hasn't changed that much, graphics not quite as pretty as the latest video games, but that means it runs fast and will run on quite old computers.

It's real-time rather than turn-based like ordinary Dungeons and Dragons, which I think is a pity - I rather like turn-based things, means I don't have to worry about reacting fast.

Other than that, a lot of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) include that co-operative dungeon crawling, and in theory people are supposed to have specialised roles, but, in practice, if you just play with random strangers who join after you put up a "looking for group" message, they tend to ignore than completely and just charge ahead shooting everything and leaving the less experienced players trailing along behind wondering what's going on while the more experienced players blast everything before they can work out what's going on, which is annoying.  If several of the people here joined forces, we could get together and do it that way.

One I used to play, which had dungeon crawling, was a Korean game called Mabinogi.  It's a bit mixed - there's a lot of farming stuff with pretty pictures, and an extensive crafting system that becomes almost a quest in itself with finding all the right materials, but also fighting monsters in caves.  Something for everyone, you can choose which bits you want to do.  It's based vaguely on Irish mythology which is presumably why it's named after a Welsh legend - whoops.  It was rather nice.  Combat was real-time but rather slower and easier to follow the individual steps of than most games.  It's still going, apparently.

  • I came once close to playing neverwinternight with a colleague from work. But then that didn't happen. We did play d&d with a group at work, but that became a bit silly and we didn't continue. We did end up with a funny joke, two players (two female colleagues) had their character a bit falling in love, and I remarked: I think you girls got things a bit mixed up, there's the skill 'intimidate', but what you guys are doing is 'intimite date'... I remember everybody around the table laughing their heads...
