Respite!!!

Been offered respite for Bounce and the lady allocated to him will start in the new year. After 21 years he is the first to be offered respite and not sure what to expect! Does anyone have any experience with respite workers????

I have been asked by paed for Bumblebee to think about respite for him has well, he currently doesnt have a def diagnosis but was told by paed she thinks its Global Cognitive Development Delay and now paed thinks he has possible Autistic traits.

We have already met the lady who has been allocated to Bounce and she is at university but has no experience with Autistic Kids, not sure what to ask for or expect! any ideas???

  • I have thought about does she know anythink about autism and when i asked her yesterday she said no! She is studying physcology at university and Autism came up in one of her lectures and someone from 'Resources for Autism' was looking for carers to help families i.e thats who is providing the respite. She will eventaully be taking him out I am just cautious. She is quite young and from what I have observed she is very friendly and is supposed to be helping me implementing pecs for bounce has salt has recommended this and paed just struggle with the time and with 6 other kids who also have some demanding needs life is quite challenging.

Not sure what input Resources for Autism have given her to know her role. Just so new to all this and they came on the initial visit when everyone was home and many interuptions followed hence me not been able to ask any questions I would eventaully think of.

I have been told I have to feel comfortable for her to take Bounce out in the meantime I have to stay with her while she playing with Bounce. Did have to mention several times that bounce only undertsands 1/2 word instructions and struggles to stay in one room for a length of time.  Dont think she fully understood what I meant.

Any advice is welcome no matter if its doom n gloom, it all helps me get a perspective of the situation and with 7 kids and many very demanding its impossible for myself to think straight to weigh it all up on my own!
