To quote someone's message, first select/highlight the relevant text, and then use the Quote button that appears
To "mention" someone, type @ followed by the start of the forum name, and choose from the list; that person will get a notification of being mentioned

I tried to send a friend request to a member in distress, and provide moral support. However, I'm not sure if the request was processed.

I emailed NAS. Personally, I believe that this site is poorly designed.

I'm sorry that you're having difficulties with the site.

In your profile, there's a Friends tab. By default it shows those who have accepted your Friend requests, but if you change to Your Requests then you can see the pending ones. Hope this helps.
