new 'under-occupancy' regulations

Has anyone had problems with regard to this?  My daughter had a visit from a council official to tell her that she would now have to either a) move to a 2 bed; b) pay over £300 per month extra for their home; or c) get a job !!!  Her three year old has severe autism: her two year old doesn't.  Putting them in a bedroom together would be a nightmare for all concerned as her sleep problems are also severe.  Apart from the expense, moving would also be a nightmare - not that the council has any 2 beds to offer her.  My daughter had to give up her last job with no notice as her childminder decided that she was too 'difficult' in her behaviours - so 'getting a job' would not be an option.  The only current exemption to this revision to current legislation is those aged over 61 (who are never 'under-occupied' - not!) whilst no-one with any type of disability is exempt.  I am sure this is discrimanatory.  This has recieved no publicity thus far.  Are you also falling foul of this change?  Please let me know!  I have written to my MP as I feel it morally wrong and I'm sure we should be able to ensure all those with eligible disabilities should not be disregarded in this way.

  • I had a phone call from my housing last month asking all sorts of questions and was told I am under occupied. (I have 7 kids, 5 with s/n inc asd and live in a 7 bedroom house). My kids disabilities vary and 4 of them have rooms of their own (21,19,17 and 5 yr old - lil man asd!) one of my kids (nealy 13also has a room of his own has well and 8 n 7 yr old share even though 7yr old has Global Congnitive Development Delay, MLD and now sleep issues! which is causing many problems within the home and for my 8yr old. I cant put any more of the kids in rooms to share has most of the bedrooms are single .

I was advised that I would probably have to move which is a joke has there are no 6 bedroom houses about at all. I was looking to move but with the availability of houses to suit our needs its impossible and it took me over 10 years to get this house!

I am unable to work has I have to help and attend to my kids needs and support them. Eldest son has been signed off work and is receiving ESA (highest support package) and 19 year old will be  assessed next year (he currently at college).

I have seen and know many many older people in homes where they are under occupied (only using 1 out of 3+ rooms) which would surely be more suitable for families.
