Tics

My 10 year old grandson always had a vocal tic. Its a sort of click/suck sound and it would go on and on and on. However, we got to the point where we hardly noticed it, it was just a part of him.

Just recently though, the vocal tic has stopped and been replaced by a facial tic.  It is quite severe and very noticable. He has said a couple of times recently that people have commented on his vocal tic and told him to be quiet so I am wondering if he has been trying to stop that but the stress of doing so has brought on the facial tic. The tic doesn't actually bother him at all, he says it feels nice, so in a perfect world he shouldn't have to worry about it, but we know he will start to get problems from other people because of it. At his present school he is unlikely to really have any trouble over it but he goes to secondary school in a couple of years and we are concerned that he might get bullied about it there.

Does anyone have any tips on how we can help him to stop the tic or at least lessen it?

Thanks :o)

  • My son tics, he seems to have lots of different ones and when very stressed can go through them all, shrugging his shoulders, stretching his head forward, tapping his fingers on his face, pulling his tee shirt down constantly, and a little grunt that he does, we are on the diagnosis process, and looking at aspergers, my son is 15. It's definnately helped him now we've told all our family and friends just to ignore them that he's not in pain or uncomfortable and that its his way of releasing his stress ( that's what son has told us it does for him). it's very hard being in public as people do stare but he's so busy stretching and twitching he doesnt notice people looking, thank goodness!. Personally I don't think it's my son that has the problem, I would rather try to educate others than stop him ticking, but that is obviously not easy in lots of circumstances, I'm watching your thread with bated breath to see what others think, we've been bumping along for 15 yrs with no help, it's been exhausting!!.
