autism and sport

Dear community users,

I am a Dutch lecturer at University of Applied Sciences Arnhem Nijmegen (HAN). My specialty is sport-participation and I am working on a new idea:

To create chances for everyone I want to know what the best way is for choosing a sport for someone with ASD.

  • You can't.

Everyone is different. As such, we each have different preferences. I would love to take up archery and enjoyed dodgeball at high school, but was forced to partake in aerobics or football (both of which I learned to hate with a passion).

I'd advise against competetive sports unless the individual requests to take part, as these sports are usually pretty brutual socially with others mocking each other for any percieved 'weakness'.

Concequently, I'm pretty sure you're meant to ask the NAS if they'll put up a questionnaire or your contact details via the 'volunteer' section. Not through the forum as you'll probably have your details edited out by an mod.
