Shows/Conventions/Exhibitions

I’m leaving shortly to go to The Big Bead show with my eldest (21) because we’re both into making jewellery. I just wondered what type of shows/conventions/exhibitions other people in here enjoy going to, or would like to go to?

  • That sounds interesting. Will you buy any models there or are you going purely to look at other people’s creations?

The Bead Show was good, albeit a bit busy! My daughter bought herself some more supplies and got me a kit to make a beaded tea light holder for Christmas. I already have far too many beads so I resisted the urge to buy any more but it was a good girly day out nonetheless.

  • I can imagine that they are worth more than their weight in gold!

I hope you enjoy your visit to Gaydon!

I'm having massive Warwick castle envy at the moment, I might be able to tie it into another trip that I'm making later this year though, where there's a will, there is a way!

  • This is why I try to buy cheap abandoned kits form ebay - all those little bits are literally worth their weight in Gold!

Yes - looking forward to Gaydon - haven't been there in years so it'll be good to make it a combined visit - all sorts of eye-candy.  Smiley

  • OMG! that really is horrifically expensive!

Seems like you'll have double the fun at Gaydon with both cars and trains :-)

  • The pieces are between £2 for a locker, £6 for a lifeboat and £16 for a gun - you can very quickly spend hundreds building a battleship.

We've found out that Gaydon have a model train exhibition on at the same time!    Woohoo!   Lots of models!

  • It makes sense to do the 3D printing if it saves money and I guess if the pieces you are making are tiny that would mean less materials cost too?

It seems like Gaydon will be a bit of reminiscing as well as admiring all the cars on display?

  • 3D printing is becoming more mainstream and small printers are cheap - ideal for models.     Also, the cost of buying bits for models is really expensive so more details = more expense.     If I can make them all myself, then the cost is just the materials.

Warwick looks nice and Gaydon has a lot of interesting cars - including a Princess and Metro exactly the same as we had years ago - same versions and colour..

  • It probably varies, I imagine that some Autistic women are into model building too, but more traditionally feminine creative pursuits might be slightly more common.

I was sooo ridiculously obsessed with jewellery making and beads several years ago. I have a rather large stash of beads left from that time so I rarely need to buy more. I also have a kiln for making silver clay jewellery, I ‘really’ need to get around to using that! To be honest, I’m a bit scared of it, hence why I’ve avoided using it! I mean it heats to such a high temperature! What could I stand it on to use it that it wouldn’t burn to ashes? I ‘really’ need to educate myself more on using kilns Flushed

I still sew jewellery when I have the time though. I got some inspiration yesterday while looking around. See I have a book at home on making beaded Christmas tree decorations, basically snazzy covers for baubles and I have another book on how to make beaded people. So I was thinking of blending two of the designs, so the dress of the beaded person becomes a rather glamorous ball gown that drapes nicely over a bauble. I shall make one when I can find the time and upload a photo on here.

  • Well, Christmas Day is also my birthday Slight smile So I’d like to think that I might be allowed some time to get creative with beads!

I still need to visit Warwick Castle! It’s definitely on my ‘to do’ list! You’ll have to let me know what it’s like? The Gaydon museum looks like a car enthusiasts dream! That should be a really interesting weekend Slight smile

Ah! Seeing what the competition’s model boats look like, so that you can ensure that yours are better? Are Computer Aided Design and 3D printing commonly used in making model boats, or is that your own personal innovation?

  • the audie female equivalent of model building in audie males is .........   BEADS!

  • Cool - so you've got a creative Christmas coming.     We're doing the boat show as well as Warwick Castle and Gaydon museum - a long weekend near Brum.     I doubt if I'll buy anything at the show unless it's a real bargain - it's more of a measuring of the state of the art to see what quality I need to produce for my next models.      I'm going CAD & 3D printing for the one currently on the slipway.
