Spelunking (my all-time favourite word - it's what they call caving and pot-holing in the USA. Though, I'm a bit miffed that us Yorkshire cavers didn't think of it first!)
OMG what's the etymology of that?
Most caves are formed by water, and no noises from the surface can reach the darkest depths, so spelunkers spend a huge amount of time listening to the "splelunk, spelunk, splelunk..." of wellies stomping through stream passages (to most Yorkshire cavers a "damp" cave = waist deep water!)
I'm pretty sure that it's merely a bizarre coincidence that the Latin for "cave" is "spelunca"!
