Last evening..

10 years 6 months ago my daughter passed away at a year old.. this much time later and I now have a beautiful 6 year old daughter and last evening we did a bat watch..

We sat for an hour as the sun went down.. as you can imagine a six year old dosent want to sit still for that long but she was magnificent and sat quietly and intently..

At 946 and out of the dusky night we saw our first bat.. it was as fast as lightning but I still had just enough time to look at her to see the absolute concentration and delight on her face.. we saw about 10 bats racing around.. it was a beautifully perfect evening and I shared it with my daughter..

Thought I'd share this as even though at one point in my life in thought I couldn't carry on but last night I felt like the luckiest and most blessed man alive..

Anyone else have any perfect times to share..

  • I am so sorry to hear of your loss! I’ve had 3 miscarriages but that doesn’t compare by even a tiny fraction to how traumatic and painful it must be to have a child for a year and then lose them!

I’m really glad though to read about your perfect evening with your 6 year old daughter! She must have been so intrigued to watch the bats! What type of venue did you do the bag watch at?

This story especially made me smile as I’ve been referring recently to my youngest daughter (2) as being a bat Bat because she worked out how to do headstands a couple of months ago and since then has spending A LOT of her time upside down!

I can’t think of a ‘perfect’ time to share right now but I’m taking my middle daughter (5) out this afternoon so I’ll come back on here later to tell you what we got up to!

  • O she really was.. we played a few bat calling sounds courtesy of Google and sat in the back garden.. we are surrounded by very large oak trees and could see the sun set behind them.. magical..!

Has she mastered how to drink upside down yet..lol.. I refer to my 3yr old son as a magpie as he literally picks up anything he sees while walking and sticks it in his album.. he has from leaves to bottle tops.. a mile walk with him can take an hour but hey were never in a rush to do anything..!

  • That seems like a very good bat watching evening!

She hasn’t yet mastered drinking upside down, though it wouldn’t surprise me if she did! For the moment though she just enjoys spending a lot of time upside down!

Your son’s collecting tendencies seem interesting. What is it about the objects that he collects that he likes?

I didn’t take my 5 year old out in the end yesterday as it was just too hot! She spent most of the day in the inflatable lagoon pool in the garden! We did however start making some ‘make a wish shortbreads’, from a children’s unicorn Unicorn baking book. We need to finish assembling them later today, I’ll put a picture up on the biscuit thread once they’re done!

  • It started with anything shiney but soon progressed to all sorts.. I've noticed most of the objects that end up in his book have lots of shape to them and very bright colours.. he does however have 2 absolute obsessions and they are balloons and flash lights..

How did you get on with the unicorn baking..?
