(Hu)man on the moon

It's the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. I'm not old enough to remember it but I have been fascinated by all the documentaries this week. I have an interest in space and the Universe which comes and goes, but the wonder is always there.  (See my avatar). It's been interesting to watch the docs as its opened up doors in my head of different thoughts which I had previously not considered. (Too many to mention just yet!) I think it's because I understand the context of it more now.

What are your thoughts on the moon landings? Did you see for yourself on the TV all those years ago? How did it make you feel? Do you think the money was spent on the right thing or should have gone to those in need? What do you think about current or future space exploration?

  • I sat and watched it all - biggest technical achievement in mankind's history.   I have a pen-pal who is a conspiracy nut - his blatherings are hilarious.

I greatly admire the astronauts - men willing to undertake a mission with so many possible failure modes and the scientists and engineers that made is all possible.

I've been to Kennedy Space Centre a few times - the Saturn V is amazing.     Each of the F1 engines burned 3 of tons of fuel per second lifting thousands of tons up into the sky.

I've built spaceships and missiles - the technology is quite simple but designed to the limits of the materials.

  • I don't agree with the conspiracists! There are explanations for all their theories! Yes, one thing which I got from watching all these docs was that those men were fearless. To sit on top of those rockets trusting everything would be successful.  What fascinates me is all the engineering how everyone collaborated, all the parts and that there was such less technology compared to what we have today.  And the fact that they had to also rely on good old physics, not just the tech.

I did kind of feel it was all about the USA when really I should've been about human kind. I feel that the different perspective of our existence that it offered was too short lived though.

Wow I bet that was great at the Kennedy Space Centre! I'd love to go.
