Hot mess?

I keep hearing the phrase its a 'hot mess' used. Given the context it presumably means its a right mess! But why hot? This is going to bother me until I know where it came from and why, because it makes no sense!

I understand this phrase to be a euphemism for 'it's sh*t !'

Presumably it's hot because it's recently produced.
