Doctor's note for exam arrangements

Hello. This is my first post, so I'm sorry if this is not the right way to ask, but I was wondering if anyone had any information that might help me, and this seemed like the right place for help with autism-related problems.

I have my first exam (coming up this summer) since I was diagnosed, and it has been a long time since I had an exam anyway, but I need to submit a doctor's note explaining the difficulties I have in exam situations. The only problem is that I don't even know the name of my doctor, so I highly doubt they know me well enough to make real suggestions based on my personal needs, as they have never experienced them.

My question: is there another way to get a note like this, but perhaps not from my doctor? I haven't seen anyone since I've been diagnosed (which was 2015), so I really don't know what to do.

  • Are you sure you're approaching the situation from the right angle?

    I mean from my own uni there are two ways to get special exam arrangements etc. The first would be if you're submitting medical evidence, which is more for illness and short term conditions, and in that case, you might provide a doctor's note to explain what current short term difficulties you're having and submit it with an extenuating circumstances form.

    The other way would be setting up a support package with disability services. You only need to provide your diagnosis in that case (a detailed report in this case might be helpful but usually not necessary; usually just a piece of paper confirming your diagnosis is enough). You would then have an assessment with them to determine what support they can offer you (which definitely can include special exam arrangements in addition to other things) which would then stay as a standard thing (afaik, you wouldn't have to then ask for special exam arrangements every time, but if you did instead of having to provide medical evidence every time you would just refer the admin to the disability people).

    I got a letter that confirmed the diagnosis, and suggested that I look into autistic websites for more information. Even though I had my suspicions, I was still quite overwhelmed by the news, so didn't want to look for "help" before I understood myself better. But now I've gone back to school, I don't know where to get any "useful" documents from. I have something which effectively says a blanket statement, and nothing more specific.

  • what paperwork did you receive at diagnosis? Eg  I got a letter to show an employer that listed difficulties I have, etc
