TV Remote

I guess everyone has different ways of doing things and everyone has strengths in different areas. It must be very frustrating to always lose things?

I think what you’re describing about not being able to recognise an object that’s right in front of you, is visual agnosia, it very commonly co-occurs with prosopagnosia (difficultly recognising faces) which you say you also find difficult. Do you find that that presents a lot of difficulties in everyday life?

My visual memory and perception is very good. I’m the person that would see the needle in the haystack. I’ll also put my hands up to being completely obsessed with everything in the house having a specific place where it belongs, I have always been like that. It’s probably the reason why, even after having an ABI I never lose things (apart from the odd cup of coffee being temporarily misplaced for a few minutes, but I think most mums of young children are guilty of that from time to time) because everything has its specific place so I know exactly where to find anything.

If I wear odd socks and someone notices I say that I have another pair just like them at home ....

I sometimes find creative ways to justify a pair being a pair - like "they both have animals on" or "they both have stripes" :-)

Wish our sock monster would take partners smelly socks, but no its fussy and steals the clean ones! 

Good plan for the odd socks, I save ours for going over shoes in icy weather.

I will lose anything and find it very difficult to put things back where I get them from.

Something can be on its own on an empty desk and I cannot see it.  It can be right in front of me and it doesn't register and I can spend a long period of frustration looking.  I can be using something and then it just 'goes missing'.

A radio programme several years ago said that this was due to the brain not registering the object and therefore it appeared invisible for a period of indeterminate length.  There is a word for this condition and it is similar to not being able to recognise faces another thing which I find very difficult.

Putting things away means I forget where I have put them.  And then causing a mess looking for them when I want them again.  Or even purchasing more of an item I know I have because I need it and cannot locate it.

It doesn't stop the sock imp stealing the socks, but I try to always buy the same colour/style of socks (plain black).  That way they always match up.  Even if the style is slightly different it isn't noticeable.

 What’s so ridiculous about all these random places where the remote turns up is that they are of absolutely no use there whatsoever, so why take it there in the first place? I really do not understand 

Every house has a sock monster! Rather mysteriously they only ever seem interested in taking one sock out of a pair of socks! Perhaps I should start making ‘sock monster’ cuddly toys out of the odd socks and sell them on eBay to make money out of this misfortune? Maybe this is how the sock monster cuddly toy craze started (there’s loads for sale online, odd socks made into cuddly toys)

My other half used to have a habit of taking it to the toilet and leaving it on the window sill. Drove me mad! I mean who takes stuff to the toilet! We got him his own telly for his man cave means he leaves ours alone!

weirdly my children never lose the remote, only my husband! Perhaps I should ban him from using it and hide it from him

Certainly comes in handy when the kids do manage to lose it! 

Pens always go missing in my house!

That is a really good idea. I think I may need to invest in a universal remote control 

If it was just me, I could happily live without a TV but a TV is a handy device for occupying children while I’m cooking/cleaning/other.

I have a serious issue with people not putting things back where they go/not putting things back properly. I even get wound up in shops if people have either knocked something on the floor and just left it or put something back in the wrong place, to the point where sometimes I actually have to stop and put the item back in the correct place. So many issues in my house would be avoided if people just put things back correctly, things wouldn’t get lost, cupboards would stay tidy, I wouldn’t trip over random stuff on the floor! But, that said, I like my life and I love my kids so I guess a bit of chaos and things getting lost is just the price I have to pay.

I've just found the bell in my head that this was ringing: I once drilled a hole through the end of a pencil to attach it to my piano with a piece of string, after months of having to go searching for the stolen pencil when I needed to mark up some piano music that I was studying!

OMG so many anecdotes come flooding back!

I remember once completely losing my cool when we sat down to watch a DVD and couldn't find the remote! Bought a spare from eBay, then the original tuned up! We still have the spare a decade later, haven't watched a DVD in about 7 years and the DVD player has just gone off with the original remote to UNI with younger stepchild.

Elder step-daughter once spent a month or two watching her bedroom TV being able to see only 25% of the screen around the edges of a modal dialogue box asking for a re-tune that could only be dismissed via the remote which, quelle surprise, she had lost and couldn't be arsed to look for!

Every night one of the kids would be lolling on the sofa with the remote sliding inexorably slowly towards the edge of the seat cushion, completely out of their consciousness (but driving me mad if I saw it) only to clatter loudly onto our laminate floor some indeterminable time later.

Most of the remotes that survived the "children years" have no battery box cover. Those that needed the cover to hold the batteries *in place* are covered in years of sellotape fragments and sellotape glue.

Also we purchased a universal one that will work everything which is kept shut away in case of emergencys! 

Our children kept doing this so we attached a string to it.
