Getting an autism diagnosis. What’s the process?

Hi, my name is Emma. 2 weeks ago, I finally spoke to my doctor about how I suspect I maybe autistic. I’ve had this suspicion for around 3 - 4 years. Tomorrow (28th January, I’m going with my dad to talk to her about this and what he has noticed about me and my behaviours, I’ve also got to take in my list of things that I’ve noticed about myself so she can send that off with my referral to the hospital.

What I would like to know is what is the process and how does it work? I live in Wales so I don’t know if it’s any different to any other part of the UK.

Hi Emma,

Our Diagnosis page here on the NAS site has a lot of information about the process of getting an ASD diagnosis so it sounds like it might be helpful for you to have a look there - https://www.autism.org.uk/about/diagnosis.aspx

In short, if your doctor agrees with you that you may have ASD, they can refer you to a diagnostic service who will do an assessment and either give you a diagnosis, or not. The process is laid out in full in the link above along with additional information from other sources and links to the NAS helpline and support services. If you are diagnosed you might also want to look at our 'After Diagnosis' page - https://www.autism.org.uk/about/diagnosis/adults/after.aspx which has further information and support.
