What book are you reading now?

I decided that I needed a new book to read and managed to find one on my bookshelf that I’d only half read so thought I’d finish it off: Tower, An epic History of the Tower of London by Nigel Jones. I just wondered what everyone else is reading at the moment? What does everyone else like to read?

Parents
  • 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love', by Raymond Carver - possibly my all-time favourite writer.

    'Hunger' - Knut Hamsun

    'Factotum' - Charles Bukowski

'This Place on Third Avenue' - John McNulty

'Up in the Old Hotel' - Joseph Mitchell

I don't much like contemporary or mainstream fiction (too market-focused and formulaic), and prefer the classics.  I like stuff that surprises me, not stuff that I can predict by page 30.  Formula kills it for me.
