What book are you reading now?

I decided that I needed a new book to read and managed to find one on my bookshelf that I’d only half read so thought I’d finish it off: Tower, An epic History of the Tower of London by Nigel Jones. I just wondered what everyone else is reading at the moment? What does everyone else like to read?

  • It keeps my mind busy and not thinking about other problems.

  • Yes Robert123, thank you for reminding me to think about what I am typing and for making me delve back into my advanced statistics book, I took advanced statistics as an option in the 3rd year of my psychology degree. You are of course quite right. Calculus is actually a very fundamental part of advanced statistics, especially when comparing linear curves on graphs etc. I just never really saw it as calculus, calculus disguised as statistics!! I think to be honest I tried to forget that module, it was one of my strongest subjects and I revised loads for the exam, sat down in the exam and my mind went completely blank and I couldn’t remember a thing! It’s the only time that’s ever happened to me in an exam and I was very upset!

Do you do a lot of maths in your spare time?

  • A good knowledge of calculus is a prerequisite to understanding probability & statistics beyond an introductory superficial level.

I prefer the American calculus books.  They put the British (school) text books to shame.  And I've had the above book for over twenty years and I always learn something new when working through it.

I did double A level  maths at school.  And it was a shambles.  We had a total of five maths teachers, teaching the various topics.  Their teaching ability was ok.  But the their gaps in technical knowledge became obvious as whole topics on the syllabus were missed out.  So I just taught myself from library books.
