  • Religion: I am an atheist, but can understand why people are religious and want to believe in something higher than what we currently have. I am a socialist, and socialism is a form of Religion because it believes that there is more to life than what we currently have. Only it is a practical religion because it combines idealism with materialism in attempting to create a heaven on earth  - not a perfect world (that would be Utopian and probably would not be a nice world - see Huxley's Brave New World), but a world in which poverty no longer exists and  material insecurity no longer exists.

    So I understand the appeal of religion, but superstition is illogical. I have read the whole bible and it is full of contradictions. The Christ story does not make logical sense and is so stupid as to be laughable. Having to bow down to a higher being seems stupid and servile too - God the construct is a dictator. Essentially believing in absolutes - absolute human-rights, equality for all - is a spiritual/religious desire. I quite like Buddhism, but this is more a philosophy than a religion.

    The main reason why I am against organized religion (as opposed to private beliefs) is because it is institutionally homophobic and misogynistic.

    Atheism means not believing in theism, but does not mean you cannot have spiritual beliefs or believe in higher ideals. Atheists are in fact often more religious than true believers!
