-HOW I SEE THE WORLD

Sorry I couldn't get back to you last night.

I've seen the Truman film and the first Matrix film, though I remember little about the latter, but few truths are written in the products of American popular movies.  I write as a published writer, a man dedicated to truth who knows that little truth remains once a story has become a product.

I guess I'm a lot older than you, too - I mean, it won't be all that long till I'm old enough to draw a pension, and I've lived in this society a long time.

"Through the lies and deception it is obvious the country is run by crooks and thieves..."

But which country, which society, isn't?  Do you think you would - or any of us would - fare better in France or Germany, China or Iran?

There are conspiracies - the machinations of a political party, in and out of power, the deliberations of the managing boards of banks, multinationals and tin pot businesses - but those conspiracies are much the same everywhere, because people are much the same everywhere.  Not only that, but they pretty much always have been.

There was no moral purpose, surely, behind the Roman invasion of Britain or, for that matter, behind Magna Carta.  

The democracy whose principles you seem to value enfranchised only people of property, and then only men, until less than 100 years ago, whilst the women who strove so valiantly for the vote strove for it principally for the middle and upper classes to which they belonged.  It must have come as a bit of a nasty surprise to some when they discovered their tweenies and parlourmaids wanted a few minutes extra time off their 16 hour shifts to go trotting off to the polls.

Perception modification has become more sophisticated as the political and wealth stakes have become higher and technology more advanced, but it has always been there.  The concept that the poor, for instance, are poor because of their own fecklessness and idleness seems to exist everywhere and to have existed pretty much through all time.  Ditto the concept that disability or differentness of almost any kind are judgements of God or Nature, and that the majority is always right.

It is reprehensible that poverty remains a prison for so many.  It was for me for a great many years and only now have I, temporarily, escaped it.  I say temporarily because my current home is a 'tied' home and when my partner and I reach retirement age we face a real risk of homelessness.

Just like you, I think, I hate the trash culture of modern times (though it is not exclusive to modern times) and I know there are better reasons to live, better things to enjoy and better things in which to find satisfaction than those things most people choose today.

There, for the moment, I have to leave it - I promised someone I would take them out this morning - but I look forward to continuing this discussion later, provided you remain interested in doing so.
