Now that the dust has settled following the publication of the paper by Herwig Czech earlier this year, I have had a deep think about the development of AS over the decades.
My conclusion is that in a similar parallel you cannot have Christianity without Jesus you cannot have AS without Hans Asperger. There have been calls both on this forum elsewhere to rename AS to Wing Syndrome, or something else, but this overlooks the fact that Lorna Wing could not have carried out her work and published her paper in 1981 without the knowledge of the work of Hans Asperger. There are also calls to submerge AS into autism or autism spectrum disorder as a result of DSM-5 but this fails to take into account factors like levels of functioning or speech and language delays etc.
The real elephant in the room is that AS was never co-discovered from the outset in the post war decades. In fact there is precious little evidence that pieces of the AS puzzle were even falling into place following the observation of children by teachers, educational psychologists, or pediatric consultants - in the English speaking world at least - that would have led to a co-discovery of AS. Discussions at an AS support group revealed that it is plausible that without the work of Lorna Wing and Uta Frith, which is solidly based on the work of Hans Asperger, then AS would not have been co-discovered until after 2000. It would not have been co-discovered by the medical or the psychiatric profession, or the NAS for that matter, but on internet discussion forums for parenting and teaching. Formally recognised connections between the co-discovered AS and autism would be unlikely until at least 2010 after medical and psychiatric professionals have studied the findings of parents and teachers.
