Tips for dealing with anxiety?

Hi all,

I have suffered most of my life with anxiety, I was wondering if any of you have any top tips to help calm down?

I have to go to court as a witness the end of next week and to say i’m scared is an understatement. I have IBS and regardless of what I do leading up to something big/scary I can have loose stools and often struggle to eat as well, so much so that I’ve ended up in hospital with low potassium as a result is the diarrhoea.

So in the lead up to this, what can I do? Even just a little help is greatly appreciated!

  • Hi there ParaTed I used to appear in court on a regular basis as part of my work. A good way of feeling less anxious is to visit the court room beforehand so you are familiar with the layout. It is also helpful to talk through what will happen on the day. Special arrangements are sometimes made if witnesses are deemed to be vulnerable.

There's some information here about appearing in court and organisations that offer support:

As as far as managing the physical effects of anxiety goes there are various breathing and mindfulness techniques. GPs can also prescribe beta blockers that can reduce the symptoms of anxiety. Staff who work in a court will be understanding about nervousness as it affects lots of people. You should be able to ask for addditonal consideration because you are autistic. Make sure you get enough information in advance and are able to ask any questions you may have. I am sure you will be absolutely fine.

  • Thanks very much for this. I’ve had a read of that link and it has proved useful.
