In my area (probably in most others), social housing stock is very low thanks to 'right to buy' and lack of proper investment over the years. But I recently applied again (having been turned down a few years back)... and have been accepted on the basis of mental health needs. I mentioned in the application that I am diagnosed with Asperger's and am noise-sensitive, so would prefer somewhere quiet.
I'm in the lowest priority band, presumably because I'm working and living independently. But the main reason for my acceptance is, quote, 'Needs designated elderly housing.'
This is perhaps because I've asked for somewhere quiet. But 'elderly'? At 59? Oh well... I suppose I should be grateful!
I checked the properties I'm currently eligible to bid on and they're all studio flats in sheltered retirement developments - with call systems and support services.
Roll on retirement...
