Going on holiday

Hi,

Can anyone help, i have booked a holiday the flight is four hours long and my daughter who has ASD  is very anxsious  about it can anyone suggest what i can do on the plane to take her mind off it she is 14years old.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

  • When my daughter went away with a family friend she was anxious about all the travel arrangements. (so was I!)

I got a small credit car wallet and i made a card for each step of the way.  Each with a little family connected comment or light-hearted remark.

I explained that she could look at them or not but we had discussed all the steps so she was very familier with the trip.  I pointed out that I might not have been able to guess any extra problems (ie delays - so we discussed them too)

    The steps included things like:-

Me taking her to the taxi - Big kiss goodbye YUK!

Waiting in the queue at the airport - everybody hates that - time to listen to you ipod.

    Etc Etc

I then explained that she would probably not look at them much but if things got stressfull she could just look and see how many steps she had managed and how near she was to the holiday she was looking forward too.

It worked for her. She was 16 at the time - now 21 we still use similar methods.

Try covering the plane trip with things like the drinks on the plane - the Health and safety talk - the meal - filled with things she likes to do.

I hope you and your daughter have a lovely holiday

  • right i am the same age and i would bring an ipod or something like that

    hope this helps

    the major

  • When travelling with my teenager with AS I found an Ipod invaluable.  He could "zone out" of the whole experience and the music helped to block out the noise of the plane and the people around him

    :)

  • I was very worried about this when we went abroad for the first time, but our little one just enjoyed looking out of the window at the clouds.....we also had a DS and portable DVD Player as back up. We made the staff at boarding aware of our childs needs, they let us board first so she was able to choose were she would be most at ease.
