Bake a Lemon?
You do the prep, you read the books, you check the NAS website,
You take a breath, with a forced smile, you embark.....
On the toughest job yet, as a parent, you dread
the words which are about to flow from your lips
The questions are there for the asking, the answers the hardest to find '
Why am I different mum? 'You have Aspergers Syndrome sweetheart'
An answer you wish from the pit of your stomach was wrong
And the questions then start to flow, beginning with 'why?'
'When you speak mum, its like I can't hear you
When you ask me what I want for breakfast 'Bake a lemon?'
Is my muddled reply'
'I want to be a good friend and join in now
But I'm on the edge and I don't understand why'
'You're going to have to work harder than others,
To find a path through this crazy world and then
You'll find love, achieve your goals and be happier
Be a programmer, a scientist or bin man
'You are not ill, you won't get better, you'll manage
You'll find ways to cope with each day
You'll get angry, frustrated, never bitter
But you'll live as independently as you can
