Headspace. A review.

My CBT doc suggested that I try the Headspace meditation app and see how I got on with it. Well, the man who is meant to be guiding me through my soothing meditation has a london accent but unfortunately be does pronounce his T's as D's some of the time. This is done in the manner of Smashy and Nicey off of the Harry Enfield Show. When he suggests that I may be "nodicing some disdractions" he is dead right. His phoney accent is all I am able to focus on while I'm meant to be emptying my mind.

On the positive side there is also a sleep meditation which is guided by a woman with a genuine american accent who actually sounds very nice. She shows me around her redwood treehouse most nights. <3  There are very slight variations each time but I suspect that the repetition will start to irritate me after a couple of weeks.

I've noticed that sometimes at the end of a meditation when I'm meant to be all relaxed and agreeable a message will come up suggesting that I might like to let all my friends on social media know how great Headspace is or suggesting that I spend some money on more of their wonderful products. This doesn't work on me because I  am rarely relaxed at the end. This attempt to manipulate the vulnerable punters does sicken me a bit though.

I wouldn't recommend this app to anybody.

  • The free Smiling Mind app is very user friendly and not trying to sell you stuff the whole time. You are talked through your meditation by a pleasant enough sounding australian fellow. (In australia, apparently, they have regular mindfulness meditation sessions in schools which sounds very sensible to me). At the end of each session he sends you on your way "with a smile on your mind".   Slight smile

  • Thanks O.O.S. I will give Isochronicity a try.  Slight smile

  • Relax Melodies is good. You can layer up sounds then add a meditation guide. Theres a timer for the app for if youre going yo sleep. You can add binaural and isochronic(?) sounds which you cant really hear but apparently they do something to help relax your brain.

  • Thanks NAS36609. I will check it out.

  • I personally use the Insight Timer app which does have a range of guided meditations that I’ve been told are good by others, though admittedly I personally use it simply for the timer as I practice transcendental meditation (which doesn’t require any guiding once learnt!).

  • If anyone can suggest a really good meditation app or a Youtube clip or CD that works for them please let me know and I'll give it a try. Also I will pass the info on to my CBT doctor so that it can help others. Thanks.   Slight smile

  • Thanks for the hilarious warning! Joy
